English

English study is mandatory in NSW from kindergarten to year 12.

Students learn about the English language through written, spoken and visual texts of increasing complexity as they progress through their schooling.

An understanding of the English language is central to how we communicate and essential for intellectual, social and emotional development.

The study of English should develop a love of literature and learning and be challenging and enjoyable. It develops skills to enable students to experiment with ideas and expression, to become active, independent and lifelong learners, to work with each other and to reflect on their learning.

Faculty aims:

  • The English and drama courses at Dunheved strive to create confident communicators, imaginative thinkers and informed citizens. The English courses have been developed within the guidelines of the NSW English curriculum for students in stage four and in stage five.
  • In English, students learn to analyse, understand, communicate and build relationships with others and with the world around them. The English programs play a key role in the development of reading and literacy skills, which help our students develop the knowledge and skills needed for education, training and the workplace. It helps them become ethical, thoughtful, informed and active members of society.
  • The English faculty is committed to maximise the learning outcomes for all students in a safe and stimulating environment driven by a deep belief that every student is capable of successful learning.

Faculty achievements:

Successfully participated in premier's debating,  debating enrichment day,  Chifley College debating shield,  book week,  public speaking,  story factory workshops and excursions. Research based teaching strategies like explicit teaching practices, super six strategies, seven steps to writing success, differentiation and regular feedbacks are being implemented to assist students to excel in their learning.
